A piece of Italy in full bloom—“Capri Twilight” captures the soul of a Mediterranean garden just as the sun dips below the horizon. This antique micro mosaic brooch from the 1880s is an extraordinary example of Italian craftsmanship, reflecting a time when each accessory was a canvas for artisanal mastery.

Design & Craftsmanship

The brooch is framed in a delicate twisted-rope brass bezel, enclosing a dreamy floral tableau composed of minuscule, hand-set glass tesserae. Set against a lapis-toned mosaic backdrop reminiscent of twilight skies over the Amalfi coast, the floral composition bursts with joyful color: sapphire-blue asters, ruby-red buds, marigold petals, and pastel roses—all symmetrically arranged like a bouquet offered at dusk.

Each glass piece has been cut by hand and precisely placed using the micro mosaic technique, a traditional Roman art form celebrated during the 18th and 19th centuries. The detailing is remarkable—not only for its color variation and balance but for the subtle textural effect that gives the blooms a lifelike softness despite their glass composition.

The reverse features an early safety clasp (a later upgrade from the traditional C-clasp), suggesting that this piece may have been slightly modified over time for wearability, while retaining its original Italian signature, testifying to its authenticity and place of origin.

Material & Technique

Micro mosaic jewelry involves setting tiny rods of colored glass (smalti) into a base of cement or enamel, creating intricate images with a painterly effect. Unlike standard mosaic work, micro mosaic requires extreme precision and a highly trained hand. This brooch is crafted in brass—a common choice for Grand Tour souvenirs meant to be elegant yet portable.

These floral mosaic brooches were popular keepsakes for 19th-century travelers on the Grand Tour, cherished as tokens of Europe’s art, culture, and natural beauty.

Styling Tips: A Jewel for Everyday Romance

Though rooted in history, Capri Twilight pairs beautifully with today’s minimalist or romantic wardrobe. Here are a few ways to make it your signature flourish:

  • Pinned on a crisp white blouse: Add a hint of vintage elegance to your workwear.

  • On a ribbon choker or velvet collar: Create a bespoke necklace by threading it through a narrow band.

  • With soft knit cardigans or shawls: Make cozy textures feel intentional and styled.

  • On berets or structured hats: A unique touch for winter accessorising.

  • Fastened on a fabric tote or clutch: A bold, unexpected use of antique jewelry in daily life.

Collector’s Note

Micro mosaic pieces from this period are increasingly rare and highly collectible, especially in such well-preserved condition.
