A jewel that quietly captures the romance of the open sea.

This 1980s deadstock sailboat brooch is sculpted in rich gold-tone metal, depicting a classic sailing vessel gliding across gentle waters. With its graceful sails, textured hull and delicate flag detail, the piece evokes the timeless charm of maritime travel and the leisurely elegance associated with yachting culture.

The design is beautifully balanced — two billowing sails rise above a gently curved hull, creating a composition that feels both dynamic and refined. Fine engraved texturing across the sails adds depth and dimension, allowing the brooch to catch the light with subtle brilliance.

Preserved in deadstock condition, the piece remains unworn since the 1980s — a pristine example of the era’s decorative costume jewellery.

Elegant yet understated, it carries a quiet sense of adventure and sophistication.

Design Description

The brooch is crafted as a miniature sailing vessel, rendered with clean sculptural lines that give the piece a striking silhouette.

The two sails form the central visual element, rising sharply from the mast and engraved with fine directional texture that mimics the movement of wind through fabric. At the very top sits a tiny pennant flag, a charming detail that adds character and authenticity to the nautical motif.

Below, the curved hull is finished with delicate linear engraving that suggests the gentle motion of waves beneath the boat.

The reverse reveals a classic rollover clasp, typical of well-constructed costume brooches of the period, ensuring secure wear.

At 5 cm wide, the brooch offers a pleasing statement size while remaining elegant and versatile.

Its nautical motif pairs beautifully with:

  • navy

The piece naturally complements summer wardrobes and resort styling, though its sculptural form allows it to work equally well year-round.

Collector’s Value

This brooch holds particular appeal for collectors for several reasons.

1. Deadstock vintage condition

Finding vintage brooches that have remained unused since production is increasingly rare, making deadstock pieces especially desirable.

2. Nautical jewellery motif

Maritime themes — ships, anchors and sails — have long been a favourite in jewellery design, symbolising adventure, freedom and travel.

3. Classic 1980s sculptural design

The bold yet minimal silhouette reflects the clean, graphic aesthetic of 1980s costume jewellery.

4. Timeless wearable motif

Unlike highly trend-driven pieces, nautical designs remain consistently stylish across decades, making this brooch both collectible and wearable.

For collectors of vintage brooches, maritime jewellery or 1980s costume design, this piece represents a charming and beautifully preserved example of the era.

Provenance

These earrings come from a remarkable discovery — deadstock from a historic London jewellery warehouse that closed its doors in the late 1980s. Decades later, the warehouse was rediscovered and reopened, revealing untouched vintage inventory preserved exactly as it was when the business ceased operations.

Today, this archive supplies rare pieces to film and production houses such as Bridgerton, Joan, and other major costume productions, alongside a select circle of vintage dealers.

To encounter such pieces in unworn condition after more than four decades is exceptionally rare.
