A jewel that captures the romance of the sea.

This 1980s deadstock nautical brooch features a beautifully sculpted ship’s wheel framed by deep cobalt enamel, with a graceful seagull in flight gliding across the centre. The composition evokes the quiet poetry of maritime life — open horizons, ocean winds and the timeless allure of coastal journeys.

The rich gold-tone metal provides a striking contrast to the glossy navy enamel ring, while the white enamel wings of the seagull bring a sense of movement and lightness to the design.

Preserved in deadstock condition, the piece has remained unworn since the 1980s, making it a pristine and collectible example of vintage costume jewellery from the era.

Compact yet distinctive, it is a jewel that carries both character and story.

Design Description

At the heart of the brooch sits a finely detailed ship’s wheel, a classic maritime symbol associated with navigation, leadership and safe passage.

Encircling the wheel is a deep cobalt enamel ring, whose rich colour beautifully echoes the tones of the open sea. Radiating from the outer rim are the handles of the wheel, giving the brooch its balanced circular silhouette.

Across the centre, a seagull in flight spreads its white enamel wings, introducing a sense of movement and freedom to the design. The bird appears to glide effortlessly across the wheel, creating a charming visual narrative of sea and sky.

The reverse features a classic rollover clasp, ensuring secure wear.

At 5 cm by 5 cm, the brooch is perfectly proportioned to make a statement while remaining versatile and easy to style.

Provenance

These earrings come from a remarkable discovery — deadstock from a historic London jewellery warehouse that closed its doors in the late 1980s. Decades later, the warehouse was rediscovered and reopened, revealing untouched vintage inventory preserved exactly as it was when the business ceased operations.

Today, this archive supplies rare pieces to film and production houses such as Bridgerton, Joan, and other major costume productions, alongside a select circle of vintage dealers.

To encounter such pieces in unworn condition after more than four decades is exceptionally rare.
