There are jewels that accessorise an outfit. And then there are jewels that seem to have arrived carrying an entire world with them.
 
This extraordinary 1980s Joan Rivers creation belongs firmly to the latter.
A magnificent flourish of colour and gold, its sweeping, ribbon-like form feels almost ceremonial - reminiscent of the saturated jewel tones, intricate ornament and unabashed splendour associated with the great decorative traditions of Mogul India. Ruby red, imperial purple, deep cobalt blue and luminous emerald-green enamels curl and fold around one another, each colour made richer against the warmth of the highly polished gold-tone setting.
 
Look closer, and the piece becomes even more captivating.
 
Fine golden scrollwork meanders across the enamelled surfaces, punctuated by tiny raised floral motifs and brilliant crystal accents. Some sections sweep upwards into sculptural loops; others turn softly beneath themselves, revealing beautifully textured gold interiors. The central marquise-shaped element, itself divided into rich red and purple enamel, holds a sparkling crystal at its heart - almost like the jewel fastening an extravagant silk bow.
 
There is a wonderful tension between opulence and intricacy here. From a distance, it is an explosion of saturated colour and gold. Up close, it reveals all those tiny details that make vintage costume jewellery so compelling: the miniature flowers, delicate scrolling lines, individually set crystals, dimensional folds and flashes of gold appearing between the enamel.
 
And the colours are quite exceptional. Not muted. Not apologetic. Jewel-like. The sort of cobalt, emerald, ruby and amethyst palette that seems to glow when it catches the light.
 
Turn it over and the workmanship continues. The reverse is richly gold-toned and finely textured, with the sculptural construction of every individual fold visible. It bears the Joan Rivers signature, while its clever dual fitting allows the jewel to be worn both as a brooch and as a pendant - transforming it from a dramatic lapel or sari accent into an extraordinary statement necklace.
 
A collectible piece of 1980s costume jewellery that has survived in remarkably pristine, seemingly unworn condition. Comparable vintage pieces bearing the Joan Rivers name are documented in the secondary market, including signed enamel and rhinestone designs.
 
But this particular jewel needs little introduction from its signature.
It is the kind of piece one notices across a room - and then comes closer to see.
Nearly four decades old, yet still gleaming with the exuberance with which it was made, it feels less like something preserved from the 1980s and more like something waiting all these years for its next occasion.
