An American fashion-jewellery collectible with extraordinary presence.
There are vintage bracelets you admire.
And then there are those that make someone stop mid-conversation, look at your wrist and ask:
“Where did you find that?”
This is very much the latter.
A fabulous signed NAPIER collector’s bracelet, dating to the 1980s, this piece captures the unapologetic glamour of the decade - but in a surprisingly delicate, feminine way.
Four strands of beautifully faceted clear crystal/glass beads fall across the wrist, punctuated by tiny warm gold-tone spacers and magnificent openwork filigree beads resembling miniature golden roses. At one end, the strands gather dramatically into an elaborate circular floral medallion - almost like a jewelled corsage sitting on the wrist.
It is maximalist, but not heavy-looking.
Glamorous, but not predictable.
And unmistakably vintage.
And then there is the name: NAPIER.
For collectors of American vintage costume jewellery, Napier is an important signature to find.
The company's history stretches back to the late nineteenth century, with the Napier name adopted in 1922. Through the twentieth century, the house became known for exceptionally well-made American fashion jewellery and for designs that frequently sat at the more sophisticated end of the costume-jewellery market. Former Napier president Ron Meoni notably described the company as a maker of fashion jewellery rather than simply costume jewellery; its pieces were sold through prestigious American retailers including Bergdorf Goodman.
By the 1980s, Napier was working across strung beads, glass, rhinestones, brass and other metals, moving increasingly towards the larger, more assertive jewellery that defined the decade.
And this bracelet is a wonderful expression of that moment.
Look closely at the construction.
The crystal beads have been individually faceted, allowing the bracelet to catch light from seemingly every direction. Against their transparency, the rich gold-tone filigree spheres almost appear suspended between the strands.
Then comes that wonderful oversized floral terminal: concentric circles of crystal surrounding a pierced golden centre. It transforms what could have been a simple multi-strand bracelet into something almost architectural.
Even the reverse deserves attention.
The clasp is stamped NAPIER, while the opposite fitting carries “PAT. PEND.” - Patent Pending. These are precisely the sorts of original construction details that make signed vintage jewellery so satisfying to collect. Napier used proprietary findings and clasp constructions extensively, and the signature and hardware are important parts of studying and authenticating its vintage pieces.
The fit is particularly lovely.
This is one of those rare statement bracelets that works beautifully on a smaller wrist.
Rather than hanging loosely or overwhelming the hand, the multiple strands sit together to create a beautifully dressed wrist, while the large crystal-and-gold medallion becomes the focal point.
It can also accommodate up to a medium-sized wrist, making it an especially wearable vintage construction.
And worn?
It is spectacular.
Wear it with the simplest black dress and allow the bracelet to do everything.
Wear it with an oversized white shirt, sleeves casually turned back, blue denim and loafers - suddenly this very glamorous 1980s jewel feels remarkably contemporary.
For evening, pair it with black velvet, silk or an ivory column dress. For something more unexpected, wear it with a sharply tailored blazer and almost no other jewellery.
Do not over-style it.
This is the piece people should notice.
Because the real pleasure of owning something like this isn't simply that it is beautiful.
It is knowing that when somebody asks,
“Where did you buy your bracelet?”
the answer isn't the name of a shop they can visit tomorrow.
It is simply:
Vintage Napier. 1980s.
And there is only one waiting here.
