Designed by the celebrated British fashion house Frank Usher during the glamour-soaked 1980s, they combine the grandeur of ancient civilisations with the bold confidence of vintage statement jewellery. The radiating sunburst motif, sculptural crescent form, and elongated openwork drop evoke echoes of both Egyptian revival and Aztec-inspired ornamentation - a design language that has fascinated jewellers for centuries. The result is a pair of earrings that feels at once ancient and distinctly modern.
Crafted in richly triple gold-plated gilt metal, the design catches the light from every angle. The engraved fan-like rays spread outward like a rising sun, while the architectural silhouette creates beautiful movement when worn. Despite their impressive presence, the open framework keeps them remarkably comfortable, making them as suited to an elegant dinner as they are to a simple white shirt and denim.
One can easily imagine them adorning the ears of a woman stepping into a grand London ballroom in the 1980s - confident, cultured, and entirely unafraid of being noticed.
Adding to their appeal is their connection to one of Britain's most beloved costume jewellery houses. Frank Usher became renowned for creating glamorous, occasion-worthy jewellery and fashion pieces that embodied the exuberance of post-war British style. Today, original Frank Usher jewellery remains increasingly sought after by collectors for its quality, craftsmanship, and unmistakable vintage character.
A particularly delightful detail for collectors: Sophie Turner wore a variation of the earrings in the acclaimed ITV drama Joan (see image).
More than forty years after they were made, these earrings remain unworn - preserved exactly as their makers intended, waiting for their first owner.
Styling Notes
These are earrings that require very little assistance. Wear them with a sleek black dress, an ivory silk blouse, or a sharply tailored blazer and allow the sculptural silhouette to do the work. Their sunburst design pairs beautifully with warm-toned fabrics, while their architectural form feels equally at home with contemporary minimalist dressing.
A striking example of 1980s British glamour - bold enough to command attention, refined enough to remain timeless.
Provenance
These earrings come from a remarkable discovery - deadstock from a historic London jewellery warehouse that closed its doors in the late 1980s. Decades later, the warehouse was rediscovered and reopened, revealing untouched vintage inventory preserved exactly as it was when the business ceased operations.
Today, this archive supplies rare pieces to film and production houses such as Bridgerton, Joan, and other major costume productions, alongside a select circle of vintage dealers.
To encounter such pieces in unworn condition after more than four decades is exceptionally rare.
