The design is inspired by an original engraving featured in Description de l’Égypte — a monumental 19th-century publication documenting Egypt’s ancient antiquities during Napoleon’s 1798 expedition.
The brooch showcases the serene, regal visage of an ancient Egyptian figure, sculpted in high relief with finely rendered, radiating lines reminiscent of the traditional nemes headdresses worn by pharaohs. Crafted with meticulous attention to detail and finished in radiant 24-karat gold electroplate, this piece blends the majesty of ancient Egypt with the sophistication of collectible 20th-century design.
Its design is rooted in one of over 3,000 engraved illustrations published between 1821–1830 by C.L.F. Panckoucke in Paris, now preserved as part of the National Gallery of Art’s Mark J. Millard Architectural Collection. This remarkable publication is widely regarded as the first significant contribution to the discipline of Egyptology.
