Imagine a dinner sometime in the 1960s. She reaches for her glass and beneath the cuff appears what looks like a beautiful ribbon of gold. Only when you look closer do you realise that hidden within it is a watch.
That is the magic of this piece.
A beautifully preserved LING 21 Prix, its broad articulated bracelet has the appearance of woven gold — a soft, satiny matte finish, intricate feather-like detailing through the centre and fine borders running along either side. It moves fluidly around the wrist, more like jewellery than a conventional watch strap.
At its centre sits a wonderfully dainty 2 cm dial, surrounded by a complete halo of sparkling clear stones. The contrast is exquisite: muted textured gold, then that unexpected circle of light.
Inside is a traditional Swiss manual-winding mechanical movement, currently working beautifully. The dial is signed LING 21 PRIX, and the watch carries its period markings.
Perhaps its greatest luxury is the fit. Although approximately 20 cm in total length, it is fully adjustable and can be fitted beautifully even to the tiniest wrist — sitting close like an elegant golden cuff.
And pieces like this are becoming genuinely difficult to source. As exceptional vintage disappears steadily into private collections around the world, finding a 1960s mechanical jewellery watch with this level of design, condition and originality becomes less and less commonplace.
Wear it with black, ivory silk, an immaculate white shirt or a beautifully understated sari. Nothing else competing at the wrist.
