Imagine a woman in the 1970s who had no interest in wearing what everyone else was wearing.
 
She could have worn a watch on her wrist.
 
Instead, hers fell in a long sweep of gold down the centre of her dress.
Perhaps it was an evening in Paris or London. Silk against the skin, hair swept away from the shoulders, very little jewellery elsewhere. Someone asks her the time. She reaches not for her wrist, but for the small golden heart resting against her chest.
 
And only then do you realise that the extraordinary necklace you have been admiring is also a watch.
 
That is the kind of glamour this piece belongs to.
 
Not obvious luxury. Not recognisable-from-across-the-room luxury. Something infinitely more interesting: the luxury of having found what almost nobody else has.
 
A watch conceived as a jewel
Dating to the 1970s, this extraordinary 18ct Gold plated EURASTYLE creation sits somewhere between fine vintage costume jewellery, mechanical watchmaking and objet d’art.
 
EURASTYLE is documented on vintage Swiss mechanical watches, including surviving 17-jewel pendant watches in 18ct gold plating, and period examples from the 1970s are known.
 
But this particular piece is remarkable for the sheer theatricality of its construction.
 
The necklace begins with an extraordinarily tactile multi-strand golden chain in 18ct gold plating, several fine rows woven closely together to create the appearance of a supple ribbon of gold. Running alongside is a more defined link border, lending structure to all that softness and giving the necklace an almost textile quality.
It is long, fluid and deliberately dramatic.
 
At approximately 59 cm, it descends elegantly into the upper chest and décolletage rather than sitting conventionally at the collarbone. And that proportion is important: it allows the necklace to create a long, uninterrupted golden line down the body before arriving at its centrepiece.
 
A heart.
The heart of it all
The watch case itself measures approximately 3.5 × 3.5 cm, formed into an exquisite softly rounded heart.
Its surface is anything but plain. Fine engraved lines radiate and curve across the gold-tone case like overlapping leaves, feathers or rays of light, giving the metal extraordinary texture. As the wearer moves, those incised lines catch illumination from different directions, so that the heart seems to shift between satin and brilliance.
Nestled within it is the petite circular EURASTYLE dial.
It is almost discreet.
And that restraint is what makes the design so sophisticated. The watch does not dominate the jewel; you almost discover it after you have discovered the necklace.
 
Inside is a traditional Swiss-made, 17-jewel, hand-wound mechanical movement - entirely in keeping with other documented mechanical EURASTYLE watches and pendant watches of the period.
 
And then, just when the necklace could quite reasonably have ended, the designer added its most extravagant flourish.
 
Eleven centimetres of gold
 
Falling directly beneath the heart is an approximately 11 cm articulated tassel.
Row upon row of tiny articulated golden links creates a broad, fluid fringe that moves with the body. It elongates the entire composition, taking what could have been a charming pendant watch and turning it into something far more commanding.
 
The effect when worn is magnificent.
 
The chain follows the neckline. The heart settles against the chest. The tassel continues beneath it, moving softly with every step.
 
It is jewellery with choreography.
 
And because the palette is almost entirely gold, despite its scale it never becomes visually chaotic. Instead, the drama comes from texture, movement, proportion and light.
 
For a discerning eye
 
This is not necessarily the piece everybody will understand.
 
That may be precisely why the right collector will.
There is a point in collecting when recognisable names cease to be enough. You begin looking for objects that are harder to place, harder to repeat and considerably harder to encounter again.
Pieces that make somebody lean closer.
Pieces followed inevitably by:
“Where did you find that?”
This EURASTYLE belongs in that wardrobe.
It is for the collector to whom rarity matters. Individuality matters. Provenance matters. And having something that cannot simply be ordered again matters.
Style it against an ivory silk camisole and bare skin, where the gold becomes almost luminous. Against black, it turns wonderfully dramatic. Over a fine cream or black turtleneck, it becomes pure 1970s sophistication. With an immaculate white shirt, slightly undone at the collar, it feels unexpectedly contemporary.
And with Indian dress, resist the temptation to add more. Against a beautifully draped plain silk sari or a minimalist blouse, allow the long necklace and its tassel to occupy the entire visual line.
It does not need company.
An important note on the movement
 
The mechanical watch is currently not running.
The manual winding mechanism operates, but the hands presently do not advance. Given that this is a vintage mechanical movement, a specialist watchmaker may be able to investigate, service or potentially repair it. However, we have not had the movement professionally assessed and therefore cannot guarantee that restoration will be possible.
 
We prefer that transparency.
 
Because the significance of this piece does not rest solely upon its ability to tell time.
 
Even if the watch were never restored, what remains is an extraordinary surviving example of an era when a timepiece could be treated as jewellery first and utility second - something to be worn, admired, questioned and remembered.
 
The watch tells time.
The necklace tells considerably more.
