1980s SIGNED MONET

The kind of vintage that makes the modern wardrobe more interesting.

Imagine New York in the 1980s.

Women were dressing with presence. Gold was unapologetic, shoulders were stronger, colour was richer — and jewellery wasn't chosen simply to match an outfit. It was chosen to give the woman wearing it a point of view.

And then there was Monet.

One of the great names of American costume jewellery, Monet had mastered something remarkably difficult: creating jewels that possessed the impact and finish of fine jewellery, yet were designed to be worn - confidently, frequently and without preciousness. By the 1980s, the house was at one of its most exciting moments, creating the kind of bold, beautifully constructed jewellery that has made vintage Monet increasingly sought after by collectors today.

And this necklace is such a wonderful expression of that era.

Look closely at the design.

A procession of luminous gold-tone circular links is interrupted by richly coloured red-orange cabochons, each held within a beautifully textured, rope-like golden surround.

Solid. Open. Solid. Open.

That alternating rhythm is what makes the necklace so clever.

Without those open circles, it could have become overwhelmingly ornate. Instead, the negative space allows the skin to become part of the composition. The necklace feels substantial without feeling heavy visually; glamorous without becoming ceremonial.

And then there is that colour.

Against the gold, those wonderful burnt-red cabochons have the warmth of coral, lacquer and late-afternoon light. Put them against black and the necklace becomes dramatic. Against ivory or crisp white, almost Riviera. With chocolate brown, burgundy or navy, wonderfully sophisticated.

But perhaps our favourite way to wear it?

Exactly as it wasn't intended in 1980.

A beautifully cut white shirt.
A black blazer.
A simple column dress.
A cashmere knit.
Or even a plain white T-shirt with beautifully tailored trousers.

That is the magic of exceptional vintage jewellery: you don't have to dress vintage to wear vintage.

In fact, this necklace feels remarkably at home in 2026. The sculptural gold, cabochon colour and generous proportions could quite easily belong to a contemporary runway collection - except this one carries something a new piece simply cannot manufacture:

it has seen history and carries time and story with it.

Perhaps forty years ago, another woman stood before her mirror and fastened this very necklace before dinner. Perhaps she wore it with silk and perfume, perhaps with an immaculate 1980s suit. We will never know.

And perhaps that is precisely the romance of it.

Now it waits for another wardrobe, another city, another woman - and an entirely different way of being worn.

Turn it over and there is the detail collectors look for:

© MONET.

The maker's signature quietly stamped to the reverse - not visible when worn, but there for the person who knows what she owns.

At approximately 54 cm, this is also an unusually effortless length: long enough to fall beautifully across the décolletage rather than sitting tightly at the neck. An additional 4 cm extender chain allows it to be worn at approximately 58 cm, giving considerable freedom to alter the drop according to neckline, layering or mood.

And perhaps that is the best thing about this piece.

It is undeniably 1980s.

But it doesn't ask you to look like the 1980s.

It asks only that you wear it with confidence.

Signed Monet. Circa 1980s.
54 cm + approximately 4 cm extension.
A beautifully preserved piece of American costume-jewellery history - and one spectacularly ready for its next life.

Some vintage belongs in a collection.
The best vintage belongs in your life.

In brilliant condition.
